Pre-travel jitters

Well it's less than a week left before it's time for me to go. Thankfully I'll be travelling with two of the other nursing students, so I won't be stuck on a plane or wandering around the airport in India by myself. I am nervous and freaked out of my mind right now!! But I'm also starting to get pretty excited :)

This is, without a doubt, the most random thing I've done to date, but I think the experience will be worth it. So what am I doing in India you may be wondering. Basically, I'm taking the elective course, along with 3 other students, offered by faculty. International Health is something that has been an interest of mine for the quite some time now. Probably since my 2nd year at U of A. So this seemed like the perfect opportunity for me to finally get some real hands-on experience in the area to see if it something I would really want to pursue and significantly incorporate in my health care career.

The course is essentially six weeks of primay health care nursing in an international setting. The organization we will be working with is called CHAI (Catholic Health Association of India). It's not totally clear what our role will be while we are there but, if I understand it all correctly, it'll be along the lines of working with the HIV/AIDS population to do health promotion, health teaching, and I'm hoping participating in some health program planning.

I don't leave until next week, so while I'm still here in TO waiting to go, I guess I'll just be researching more about CHAI's programs and what to expect in India (and of course, re-reading my Harry Potter book). I probably won't be posting anything until after I arrive...so stay tuned :)
